The Gutai Art Association was founded in 1954. The group had an eighteen-year history, and through ought that history they covering over fifty artists(Gugenheim 6). Not only was Yoshihara Jiro an influential artist; he was a powerful educator, plus criticizer.  Gutai broke through boundaries between painting and performance. Gutai also crossed the lines between arts and the public, with everyday life.  The group looked at art making as an act of liberty, a sign of individual spirit.  They felt they had the right to create something new. Gutai artists experimented with new methods and materials: they painted with watering cans, remote-control toys, homemade cannons, and bare feet; made brief  art work using the sky, water, sand, light bulbs, and torn paper screens; and staged exhibitions in parks that where open to the public, and even on the beach. Gutai artists gained serious attention for their use of the body and for the different work they did with technology and nature. (Guggenheim, 5)

(Bisexual Flower of 1969) Plexiglas, motors, electrical circuitry, ultraviolet tubes bath salts, water and sound, this design was so amazing, I know sometime artist take some designs to extreme well that was not the case in this piece. This piece really does make you think how far technology and art have come and how one piece can bring both of these things together. Although people were said to criticized this piece I loved it. This piece was very controversial in japan. Which I think for this reason it caught so much attention in America. This piece seemed to be individual identity. . Artists frequently motorized their sculptures, turning exhibition spaces into dens of screeching, pulsing, machinelike organisms. Yoshida‘s erotic machine-sculpture Bisexual Flower (1970) mines the mind-altering effects of this approach. (Guggenheim 8)

Kanayama Akira Akira Kanayama’s painting machine was a four-wheeled device that Kanayama could remote-control to create paintings .The canvas placed on the floor while a machine dripped and poured paint on the picture .The painting machine is an early example of the machine verses man in comparison to the in the role of artist. Kanayama’s remote-controlled painting machine mimics other artist who used the drips painting method .At the same time the machine follows the idea of automation and the physical detachment between artist and painting, bringing it to a new level, but at the same time it makes fun of how far art has come when there are no more live models and artist with a paint brush; art had changed to a man created machine assisting the artist in his or her vision.

(Shiraga Kazuo untitled 1957) oil watercolor and Indian ink on paper mounted on a canvas. The piece I saw was stated to be one of the earliest examples of his foot paintings done before he began to use a canvas. I feel he was such a free artist. This Piece could defiantly be related to historic identity years later he performed one of his best known works, in which he struggled to the point of exhaustion a to using muddy mixture of several tons of clay and concrete. By looking at this painting you can tell the method of using ample amounts of oil paint to large sheets of paper. Also laying the canvas on the floor, and manipulating the paint with only your hands and feet while suspended from a rope attached to the ceiling. Through these movements, some moves became more composed others were spontaneous, Shiraga created vibrant, unique paintings throughout his lengthy career. For Shiraga, painting with his feet enabled an encounter with the material and a direct bodily form of artistic expression, seen, the artist “painted” with his entire body in a pile of grit, directly engaging with raw matter.

Splendid Playground seeks to show Gutai’s beautiful strategies in the cultural and context of postwar Japan and to further establish the group. Gutai constructed self-expression as an statement of the individual against the mass-conformist heritages of wartime .Not only did they lead by example, performing powerful acts of self-expression, but they sought to develop the autonomy of others—of their onlookers, the general public, and especially of families by forcing them to think, create, and imagine for themselves. Pop Art turned form the highly individual abstraction to images from popular culture. Pop Art was a association from late 1950’s to the early 1960’s, mainly in London and New York. Pop Artists looked at well-liked culture for their source of inspiration.

Another important early example of work that became abstract expressionism is the work of  Northwest artist , especially his white writing canvases, which, though generally not large in scale, anticipate the all over look of Pollock's drip paintings. That is why I also of the view art expressionism embodies what America is. Repetition and lack of forefront, middle ground and experience has resulted in loss of reality in the artwork which challenges old-style art. Abstract Expressionism was a highly complicated style of art making and its understanding was top-secret to certain intellectual few. The sudden use of Pop’s banal subject matter had critics up in arms, the Abstract Expressionist was angry that they were not winning their spot light in the art market. Any ordinary person could appreciate Pop Art as a result of the images he depicted and there was a high demand for them by the valuable and well-known. He challenged the rare value of a once-in-a-lifetime artwork and went against the modernists’ idea of the creativity of the artist as he mass produced his artworks. He referred to his art studio as his “factory” and “want(ed) to be a machine” . He had a team of workers to help him produce his silkscreen as a result; Warhol had little person involvement in the artworks. He challenged peoples view on what art really is

Keith Haring Blog 8

If you like graffiti you would probly like Keith Haring. If you like cartoons you will probly like Keith haring put them together and you haring Keith said, " I find that a lot of Keith Haring work catches kids eye and even makes kids smile.  I like his work because even kids can relate to my drawings, because of the simple lines." I also like his work because he moved to New York at a young age and a lot of his graffiti style work took place in the train stations. His work stands out and catches your attention. I also find him interesting because of the way he died. So even though he had a hard life he still made great work Haring had his first New York one-man show at the Shafrazi Gallery. Not only did he create paintings and sculptures for the show, he engulfed the entire gallery with his bold color choices andfrenetic designs

 The baroque style roughly began at the close of the 16th c., 1600, and lasted in some areas until 1750. The Baroque style, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, began in Italy and quikly spread to the rest of Europe.The religious conflicts which had begun in the Renaissance with the Reformation and Counter Reformation continue well into the 17th c. The battle between the Catholic and Protestants launched wars, and divided a country - the Netherlands, became Catholic Flanders (current day Belgium) and Protestant Holland. The conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants had a great effect on art. The Catholics, through the efforts of the Counter-Reformation launched great building campaigns for churches, and their furnishings and decorations, especially in countries like Italy, Spain and Germany, and Flanders. A great demand for art occurred because of the rise of absolute monarchies, and thus grand courts, serving as hoopla and a statement of authority and power. Heavily influenced by Victorian and even Baroque styles, clothing items are most often embellished with ruffles, bustles and lace. Lolita fashion has a number of sub-styles including  The culture surrounding these trends in shopping venues are creatively themed and there are life style magazines just for Lolitas Characterised by luxury, drama and ornate detail, the style impacted upon all areas of art and design. Also painting can record records events capture things like the likeness of a person and object or thing. Photography was first use in 1839. I also believe that painting had a huge impact on photography. Paintings play a major role on the importance of photography because photographers are influenced to include details of the painting in their work in a unique way. Photography has become a part of our daily life so for all the people that can’t paint you can just take a picture

Arches Blog 5

The Gothic pointed arch formed of two arch fragments was an architectural style used in every location of a Cathedral where there is a domed shape doorways, windows, covered passages and galleries. The external part of a Cathedral which is called Slots featured pointed arches the most. Throughout this periods when they already had roman arches they later thought of making the churches bigger and have more room for "God" in them so they figured out a way to make them bigger even though they really didn’t know how to make them bigger; the Gothic arches were specifically designed to hold a larger building because if they had continued using the roman arches the build could of soon collapsed as it was created because of the weight of the building. The "Gothic arch" did not associate the idea of allowing the relationship of “Light and God” to be present. The "Roman arch" because they were more rounded, the buildings were smaller and had castled like windows that allowing the smallest amount to no lighting in. Even though they had roman arches it would not be enough to support the project of expanding the cathedrals and then supporting the addition of weight that would come after the increase in size of the building. The pointed arches that were used in the new churches were exactly the reason why they can build them so large, because it can support the weight that the roman arches cannot and therefore the reason why they were not used for the new designs of the cathedrals. The Stain glass windows used inside of the Cathedral’s, where built to fit the spaces that were left open provided by the pointed arches because there were no walls. The stain glass windows were signature windows. The "Roman Arch" because it was round couldn’t support the weight of trying to build taller buildings because they needed walls to help support their ceilings and windows. The "Gothic arch" allowed for the Stained Glass Windows to provide spiritual meaning and more Religious faith. Both arches are still used around the world today. The "Gothic Arch" is seen more due to the fact it helps provided a majestic look and pleasant feel and can be full with large amounts of light.
